Grinding a 3-Foot Oak Stump in a Backyard — Job Walkthrough

Grinding a large 3-foot oak stump in a residential backyard with Bandit SG-40 in Upstate SC

This was one of the bigger residential stumps we've ground this year. A homeowner had a large oak taken down in the backyard — the stump was right around 36 inches across and sitting about 15 feet from the back porch. They wanted it gone so they could level out the yard and eventually put in a patio.

WHY BIG STUMPS COST MORE

Bigger stump = more wood to chew through = more time on-site. A 36-inch oak has a massive root flare that extends well beyond the visible stump. We don't just grind the top — we chase those roots out so the whole area is clean. This stump took about 35 minutes of grinding time compared to 10-15 for an average stump.

Pricing for a stump this size typically runs $250-$400 depending on accessibility and root spread. The bigger the stump, the more material we're removing, and that means more wear on the cutting teeth and more fuel burned. It's just the nature of the work.

THE PROCESS

We drove the Bandit SG-40 through the side gate and positioned it right at the stump. Started by shaving across the top to take it down to ground level, then worked our way down in passes — grinding 2-3 inches deeper each pass. Once we hit about 10 inches below grade, we went after the main surface roots that were radiating out 3-4 feet in every direction.

Total grinding depth was about 12 inches below grade in the center. That's deep enough to give the homeowner a solid base for topsoil and whatever they want to do with the space — whether it's grass, a patio, or anything else.

CLEANUP

After grinding, you're left with a big pile of wood chips mixed with dirt. We raked the grindings back into the hole, mounded it up slightly (it'll settle over the next few weeks), and cleaned up the surrounding area. The homeowner plans to let it settle, add some topsoil, and seed it this spring.

CAN EVERY GRINDER HANDLE A STUMP THIS BIG?

Honestly, no. Rental grinders and smaller machines struggle with stumps over 24 inches. They don't have the horsepower or the cutting width to get through a big hardwood efficiently. You'll spend hours fighting it and still might not get deep enough below grade.

Our Bandit SG-40 is built for exactly this kind of job — it has the power to chew through dense oak and the reach to get deep below grade. When you're dealing with a stump this size, having the right equipment makes all the difference between a 30-minute job and an all-day headache.
